Hessen's largest railway museum has been located in the former Kranichstein railway depot since 1976. Find out interesting facts about our more than 200 historic vehicles and the numerous other exhibitions on the fascination of the railway.
On special occasions, the tram museum on Marburger Straße opens its doors and tells the story of over 130 years of local transport history in the city and suburbs of Darmstadt through many interesting exhibits.

Unique in Germany: The 'Feuriger Elias' in Darmstadt – steam train rides on tram tracks. Since 1997, regular trips with the steam tram and historic electric trams have been taking place in cooperation with HEAG mobilo GmbH.

Bahnwelt Darmstadt-Kranichstein is an umbrella organisation that brings together several railway associations in Darmstadt with the aim of preserving and presenting the history of the railway in the Darmstadt area and bringing it to life for future generations.
With our anniversary calendar, we are celebrating 50 years of the Darmstadt-Kranichstein Railway Museum – one of the most important railway museums in Germany. The twelve impressive motifs show various exhibits in the context of unforgettable historical milestones from five decades of living railway culture.
The calendar is now available online and will be available in the museum shop from mid-November!

The traditional Bahnwelttage will take place again on Ascension Day and the following weekend, 14, 16 and 17 May 2026.
A major highlight this year will be several guest locomotives, which will add to the variety of rolling stock: Guest vehicles will include the V60 447 from the Hanau Museum Railway, the “Lollo” V160 002 from the Neumünster Cultural Locomotive Shed and the 294 618 from Konrail GmbH, as well as a Class 249 (Siemens Vectron Dualmode) from DB Cargo, representing the “modern railway”, will be visiting the Railway World Days. A unique programme centred on the railway awaits you at the event site, featuring shuttle services, demonstrations, exhibitions and other attractions.
Please note that the Railway Museum will be closed on Wednesday 13 May 2026 due to preparations for an event.
Unfortunately, we have to cancel the entire programme of the Bahnwelttage on 9, 11 and 12 May 2024 for operational reasons.
Instead, the museum will be open regularly on 9 and 12 May from 10 am to 4 pm. The admission price will be reduced on both days.
The Railway Museum will be taking a Christmas and winter break from 16.12.2024 up to and including 11.01.2025. The first opening day in the new year is on 12 January 2025.
A small exception to the winter break will be the Christmas Model Railway Days on 28 and 29 December, when the permanent exhibitions in the museum building can be viewed alongside some interesting model railway layouts. However, the vehicle exhibition will remain closed.
The Christmas Model Railway Days will also be the last opportunity to collect your ordered Bahnwelt calendars from the Railway Museum. After that, the calendars can only be purchased with the postal dispatch option.
