Cars find a new home in Swabia

As part of the process of analysing the wagon collection, the Railway Museum is parting with vehicles that are not necessary for our collection concept or that are in multiple ownership. The declared aim is to pass the vehicles on to other associations or institutions that can refurbish and exhibit them in order to ensure their preservation.

In this context, two goods wagons O 2 and O 11 (Nuremberg) were sold to the Schwäbische Alb-Bahn (SAB) from Münsingen. The first wagon, the O 11, was collected on 27 May 2024.

This required extensive preparations on the part of Bahnwelt, as the wagon was parked on a siding approx. 1.2 km outside the museum grounds. As the transport to Münsingen was to be carried out using a low-loader, the wagon first had to be moved to the core area, where a levelled loading track is available. Due to track closures, this was not possible by rail. Fortunately, the railway museum has an operational collection of heavy goods vehicles that could be used to transport the wagon by road to the museum site;

On 18 May 2024, the O 11 was first removed from its current location using a mobile crane and temporarily parked in a meadow area. A week later, it was loaded onto the Culemeyer LR 40.9 road roller and transferred to the core site using a MAN 26.361 FAK tractor unit. There, the wagon was loaded onto the loading track.

On 27 May 2024, the SAB then had the wagon picked up by a contracted haulage company using a low-bed trailer.

This campaign has once again shown that historical technology can still provide good service today. Thanks to the excellent cooperation between the Bahnwelt’s own heavy goods group with its historic vehicles and the haulage company with its modern transport technology, the collection was successfully completed.
