The Darmstadt-Kranichstein Railway Museum unfortunately has to cancel its biggest event of the year, the Bahnwelttage on 9, 11 and 12 May 2024, as planned.
The reason for the cancellation at short notice are technical and operational requirements that could not be met in time for an operating licence. Among other things, this regulates the use of museum vehicles on the tracks of the museum site. This means that neither cab rides nor public rides with historic carriage sets can be demonstrated on the site. The planned shuttle trains to the main railway station will also have to be cancelled. For many visitors, especially families with children, a visit on these three days has become an annual must. The flow of visitors is correspondingly large.
However, in order not to leave visitors standing in front of closed doors, the museum will open with a reduced programme on Thursday and Sunday:
In addition to regular guided tours of the engine shed and the carriage shed, there will also be demonstrations of the mechanical training signal box on both days, which can be described as unique in its combination: Original signal box technology and its functions are vividly transferred to an integrated model railway. In this way, train movements and safety technology and thus the processes of large-scale railway operations can be conveyed very clearly. And young train drivers can control the train on a simulator just like on the big railway!
The model replica of Darmstadt’s former main railway station from 1846 is shown in operation on a large layout. The permanent way collection shows the technical development of the rail systems and the extensive uniform exhibition provides a comprehensive insight into the work clothing and equipment of railway workers from the imperial era to the present day.
The historic forge in the engine shed will only be in operation on Thursday (09.05.2024).
We would also like to invite you to the reopening of the Bahnwelt tram museum at its new location at Marburger Straße 16, 64289 Darmstadt on the same date, 9 and 12 May 2024. The weekend offers the ideal opportunity to combine a visit to both museums!
The railway museum will be closed on Wednesday, 08.05.2024.
