Bahnwelt Darmstadt-Kranichstein is participating in the “Tage der Industriekultur” from 29.8. – 3.9.2023 of the KulturRegion FrankfurtRheinMain with a special train to the banks of the Main in Frankfurt. The special trip on 03.09.2023 starts in Darmstadt Hbf and goes to Frankfurt am Main with a stopover in Langen (Hesse). There it goes along the beautiful banks of the Main on the harbour railway. In keeping with this year’s focus theme “Water”, the train stops at various stations along the way, with on-site explanations of the history of the facilities and installations and their relationship to water and the Main. A minimum dwell time of 30-45 minutes per stop is planned.
- The first stop is the Westhafen and the former pressurised waterworks on the far west bank of the Main;
- The second stop is the Nice Shipyard with its Mediterranean planting near the Iron Pier;
- The third stop is the Eiserne Steg. There are catering facilities and the use of toilets, among other things;
- The fourth stop will be the platform at the Weseler Werft. From there, it is a 500 m walk to the next, higher bank section of the so-called Ruhrorter Werft.
- From the bastion of the Ruhrort shipyard, waiting passengers can watch the historic train as it climbs the incline.
- The Ruhrorter Werft itself, located in the immediate vicinity of the European Central Bank, was named Industrial Monument of the Year in 2013: there, refurbished and listed cranes, a historic banana wagon and a coal wagon of the port railway recall the former importance of transferring goods from the Main waterway to rail and road. The post-industrial use and development of today’s riverside area as one of Frankfurt’s most visited leisure and recreation facilities is also explained. The buildings of the ECB and their history are also mentioned. At the platform there, you get back on the train and continue eastwards through the redesigned harbour park.
- The fifth and last stop is the transfer station of the port railway in the east of the city, whose historically preserved signal box with its small collection tells the story of the port railway.

From the tracks of the Ostbahnhof, the route then returns to the DB tracks. The Main is crossed on the Deutschherrnbrücke bridge and via Frankfurt Süd and Luisa the route returns to the Main-Neckar-Bahn tracks towards Darmstadt. After a stop in Langen, the train returns to Darmstadt Hbf.
The steam locomotive “184 DME” with a set of blunderbusses and the electric locomotive 141 228-7 at the end of the train are used.
