The Gelnhäuser Kreisbahnen were a company owned by the former district of Gelnhausen. The district acquired the majority of shares in various local small railways and merged them on 1 April 1937 to form the Gelnhäuser Kreisbahnen. After the Second World War, the district railways became a department of Kreiswerke Gelnhausen and were shut down train by train until 1995.

Coach no. 20 (1st and 2nd class with luggage compartment) has also been preserved and refurbished in the museum. The two carriages travelled with diesel locomotives VL 11 and 12 (MaK 240C) and served the Wächtersbach-Bad Orb railway line.
