Het zeilschip &#8220;Stadt Coblenz&#8221;, dat voor het vervoer op de Rijn werd gebruikt, kwam in de buurt van de stad Germersheim in een zware storm terecht, de lading gleed weg en de locomotief zonk. Twee pogingen om de locomotief te lichten mislukten, waarna de bergingswerkzaamheden werden gestaakt. Sindsdien ligt de locomotief onder de huidige of voormalige rivierbedding van de Rijn, waarschijnlijk hermetisch afgesloten, te wachten om uit haar sluimering te worden bevrijd.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-50 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-size-default\">Opgravingen geven nog geen uitsluitsel...<\/h4>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-90e9bb4 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"90e9bb4\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Na vele jaren van onderzoek begon in 1992 het eerste concrete onderzoekswerk op aandringen van Horst M\u00fcller, een gepensioneerd locomotiefbestuurder uit Cochem, die een partner zocht voor het project en ons spoorwegmuseum meteen voor zich wist te winnen. Dankzij een samenwerking met de geofysicus Prof. Bernhard Forkmann kon met behulp van de modernste technologie de plaats van de locomotief in de Rijn bij Germersheim met een hoge mate van waarschijnlijkheid worden bepaald. Het unieke schatzoekproject kreeg steeds meer belangstelling van de media nadat in 2014 de eerste solide gegevens over de locatie en de toestand van de locomotief bekend werden.<\/p>\n<p>De offici\u00eble berging was gepland voor 21 oktober 2018. Na enkele weken van intensieve opgravingen werd echter geen locomotief gevonden (zie <a href=\"http:\/\/wdpr.bahnwelt-test.de\/neuigkeiten\/projekte\/lok-rhein\/lok-rhein-die-aelteste-dampflok-deutschlands-bleibt-bis-auf-weiteres-ein-schatz-im-rhein\/\">persbericht<\/a>). De teleurstelling van alle betrokkenen was dan ook groot. Ondanks de tegenslag en vooral vanwege de grote publieke belangstelling werd besloten het project voort te zetten. Na een succesvol herstel zou de &#8220;Rhein&#8221;-locomotief de oudste bewaard gebleven stoomlocomotief in Duitsland zijn en zou dan als permanente bruikleen van de deelstaat Rijnland-Palts worden tentoongesteld in het spoorwegmuseum Darmstadt-Kranichstein.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Het project is momenteel tijdelijk opgeschort<\/strong>, omdat een heronderzoek van veelbelovende mogelijke locaties helaas geen overtuigend bewijs of aanwijzingen heeft opgeleverd.
