SUMMARY:Open Monument Day
DESCRIPTION:The motto of this year’s Open Monument Day on 8 September 2024 is ‘True Signs. Contemporary witnesses of history’.\n‘Landmarks often describe unique buildings that we remember as recognisable sights. By standing for a significant historical event, characterising the cityscape or silhouette or being visible from afar, they become a symbol, a ‘sign’ of the place.’ (https://www.tag-des-offenen-denkmals.de/artikel/motto)\nThe Darmstadt-Kranichstein marshalling yard is another such industrial monument that shapes the cityscape. Built around the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries and closed in 2002, the marshalling yard has been a listed building in its entirety since 2017. Bahnwelt DA-Kranichstein is responsible for the preservation and presentation of the track systems and service buildings, which include in particular the two striking clinker-built signal boxes ‘Kf’ at the Jägertorstraße level crossing and ‘R1’ at the former marshalling yard. In the coming years, the area will change significantly with the construction of an ICE stabling and cleaning facility in the area of the former railway yard.\nDuring free guided tours, the former function of the marshalling yard will be explained and visitors will also be given a preview of the future use of the site in conjunction with DB long-distance transport and the railway world. Access to the marshalling yard is also possible.\nPlease register for this event at info@bahnwelt.de\nThe event is subject to the status of the construction work on the new ICE facility. Access to the signal box is unfortunately not possible for people with restricted mobility.\n
